The Craft: How an Audio Cinema Production Is Made

Creating an Audio Cinema production is a structured process with the estate's creative approval at every stage.

Stage 1: Text Preparation

Everything begins with the author's complete, unabridged text. We work from authorised editions. A detailed production brief maps every scene: which passages need atmospheric sound, where the emotional peaks are, which characters appear and when. This brief is shared with the estate for approval before production begins.

Stage 2: Voice Production

We use AI voice synthesis technology — the same platform HarperCollins partnered with in 2024 — under human creative direction.

For each production:

  • A lead narrator voice is selected from hundreds of profiles, chosen for tonal match with the material

  • Character voices are individually cast for distinction and emotional range

  • Pacing, emphasis, and emotional delivery are directed scene by scene

  • The technology executes; the creative decisions are entirely human

The estate hears voice samples and approves before full production proceeds.

Stage 3: Sound Design & Score

The story's environment is built in sound. AI music generation creates original scores — style, mood, instrumentation, and emotional arc all directed by the production team. Sound effects are sourced, designed, and placed to bring scenes to life without overwhelming the text.

The word always comes first. Sound serves the story, never competes with it.

Stage 4: The Final Mix

All elements are woven together into a single immersive experience. Narration, character voices, atmospheric sound, and score — balanced so the listener is inside the story. The estate receives the complete production for final approval. Nothing is released without written sign-off.
